Sensory Interior Design for Autism & Neurodivergent Individuals
Have you ever noticed how your environment can completely shape your mood, your focus, or even your energy levels throughout the day? Think about how a cluttered room can make it harder to concentrate, how harsh lighting can feel overwhelming after a long day, or how a thoughtfully designed space can instantly bring a sense of calm. For neurodivergent individuals, these environmental factors directly impact well-being, emotional regulation, and daily functioning. That’s why thoughtful, intentional interior design is absolutely essential for making people feel comfortable and productive.
At Sensory Interiors, we are committed to redefining what interior design can do. By blending sensory design, design psychology, and evidence-informed strategies, we create environments that support autism and neurodivergent individuals in meaningful, measurable ways. We partner with families, therapists, clinicians, educators, and medical and wellness professionals to create environments that unlock potential, improve focus, and enhance quality of life. After all, when a space truly supports the person within it, everything begins to align perfectly.

What Is Sensory Interior Design?
Sensory interior design considers how every element within a space interacts with the human nervous system. This means that, instead of focusing solely on aesthetics, our interior designers prioritize how a space feels; specifically, how environmental inputs like light, sound, texture, and layout affect the brain’s processing.
For individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and other neurodivergent profiles, the world can often feel too loud, too bright, or too chaotic. Sensory interior design seeks to mitigate these challenges by creating intentional environments that prevent over- and under-stimulation. This may include but is not limited:
- Managing visual noise, color saturation, and light temperature to prevent cognitive fatigue.
- Utilizing specialized materials to dampen echo and background noise, which can be physically painful for those with auditory hypersensitivity.
- Selecting fabrics and surfaces that provide comfort rather than irritate.
- Incorporating furniture and layouts that allow for movement and a sense of physical grounding.
The result is a space that works with the body and mind, not against it.
Achieve a Space That Supports You
Creating a sensory-supportive environment begins with understanding the nervous system and honoring the unique needs of the people who live, work, and interact within that space.
No two individuals experience their surroundings in exactly the same way. Some may seek more sensory input, while others may feel overwhelmed by too much stimulation. That’s why our design process is deeply personalized. We take the time to understand how each client experiences their environment, what challenges they face, and what outcomes they hope to achieve.
Whether we’re working with a child who needs a calming bedroom to improve sleep, a therapist who requires a room designed to enhance engagement, or a business owner who wants a workplace that supports neurodivergent employees, our designs are rooted in functionality and compassion. Because when a space is aligned with the nervous system, it becomes more than a place; it becomes a tool for well-being.
Our Philosophy
Interior Design for the Senses
Our philosophy is rooted in one simple truth: environments shape people.
Specifically, the spaces we inhabit have the power to calm us, overwhelm us, support us, or work against us. That’s why it’s critical to choose every design element with care. At Sensory Interiors, we design with purpose. Our work blends sensory design, design psychology, and evidence-informed strategies to create interiors that promote regulation, clarity, and well-being. This means we don’t rely on trends; we rely on research, experience, and a deep understanding of human behavior. In the end, our sensory interior designers create spaces that support the nervous system, elevate the senses, and create meaningful comfort for every individual who walks through the door.
About
Meet the Founder and Learn the Story Behind Sensory Interiors
I founded Sensory Interiors because so many neurodivergent individuals, including myself, struggle with environments that overwhelm the senses instead of supporting them. As someone diagnosed with ADHD, I have always been aware that certain spaces helped me focus, regulate, and feel grounded while others intensified overstimulation. I have known many autistic children and adults throughout my life and have seen firsthand how deeply the environment shapes their comfort, regulation, and daily experience. With autism diagnoses rising every year, the need for sensory supportive spaces continues to grow, yet few designers understand sensory processing or the nervous system. That gap is what moved me to dedicate my work to this field.
Spaces should support the people inside them. They should help children thrive, help families feel grounded, help clinicians work more effectively, and help every individual feel understood by the world around them. Sensory Interiors is the pioneering design firm dedicated solely to sensory-informed interior design, helping families and professionals create environments that truly support wellbeing.
My interest in human-centered design began during my Master’s in Architecture in 2009, when I became fascinated by why certain spaces helped me concentrate and feel calm while others created discomfort and distraction. I became deeply interested in how design influences emotion, behavior, and well-being. Later, while completing my Master’s in Interior Design, I focused intensely on design psychology and how the built environment affects the nervous system. I applied these principles throughout my early residential and sensory commercial spaces work and quickly realized that design is most powerful when it supports how people feel, not just how a space looks.
My professional career began in high-end residential design, where I learned precision, craftsmanship, and the importance of creating environments that reflect the lives and rhythms of the people who inhabit them. I later moved to Fort Lauderdale to be closer to my family and to grow in my career. It was there that I found the opportunity to design ABA therapy clinics nationwide and apply my knowledge of design psychology to support the autism community.
Working closely with Clinical Directors, BCBAs, RBTs, and caregivers taught me more than any textbook could. Through collaboration, observation, and continuous refinement, I developed the sensory-informed design techniques that I use today. To date, I have designed more than 35 ABA therapy clinics across the United States and created sensory design standards that now guide how I approach homes, medical offices, schools, therapeutic environments, and community spaces.
My mission is simple. I design spaces that feel good to the senses and supportive to the mind, serving individuals and families not only in South Florida but nationwide. Spaces that help people regulate, rest, focus, and live with more ease. Spaces that care for the people inside them, the way design was always meant to.
